Children are easily captivated by something new and interesting. If your child is already bored with drawing or modeling, you can invite him to make crafts from bright autumn leaves. This process is extremely fascinating - amazing things are born from simple dried leaves with the help of glue, thread and other improvised devices. By taking up appliqué or making vases and bouquets, the child will not only be able to develop his creative skills and imagination, but also get to know the environment better. Collecting a herbarium for crafts together is an excellent opportunity to teach your child to distinguish between different tree species. So, what can you make from leaves?

Preparing leaves for crafts

To make any craft from leaves, you only need well-dried material; fresh leaves are not suitable. Preparing the leaves takes a long time, so you will have to be patient. In addition, the material needs to be dried correctly, here are the basic rules:

1. If the evenness of the leaves is not important for the craft, they can be placed in a spacious container (for example, a large wicker basket) and left in the fresh air. This will allow the leaves to dry quickly and allow air circulation to prevent mold from developing.
2. To get perfectly smooth leaves, you need to place them between book pages or album sheets under a press. Carefully place the material between the sheets of books or albums. It will take at least 14 days for the material to completely dry and be ready for use.
3. If you don't want to wait a long time, you can use a special herbarium press. To do this, fold a stack of leaves, alternating each layer with newsprint or scrap sheets. In a few days, the material for the crafts will be ready.

How to Skeleton Leaves

Leaf skeletons, due to their lightness and transparency, look very impressive as decoration. To achieve this effect, you need to resort to a special technique - skeletonization.

What you will need:

• any fresh leaves;
• soda;
• egg dye;
• small container - ladle or pan;
• Toothbrush;
• paper napkins.

How to make skeletonized leaves:

1. Mix soda and water in proportions of 1 to 4 and place the leaves in the prepared solution so that they are completely hidden by water.
2. Bring the mixture to a boil and leave to simmer for 30 minutes.
3. Remove the pan from the stove and remove the leaves, carefully placing them on the table with the glossy side up.
4. Remove excess moisture using napkins.
5. Clean the pulp from the leaf with a brush (this must be done very carefully, the leaves are quite fragile).
6. Rinse the skeleton under water and then paint it the desired color.
7. Leave the painted skeletonized leaves to dry.

The resulting material is ready for use.

Bouquet of flowers from leaves

A bouquet is the simplest thing that can be made from leaves, and it is worth starting with it if the child has not previously done such crafts. To make a craft in the form of a home bouquet, it is not necessary to use real flowers, dry them, etc. The buds can be made from multi-colored leaves collected on a walk. Involve children in every step of the process, creating a real creative workshop.

What you will need to make the craft:

• maple leaves (fresh) with stems;
• spool of strong thread.

To make a bud from maple leaves, you will need to perform several steps:

1. First take one sheet and fold it with the glossy side out.
2. Roll the leaf into a tube.
3. Fold the next sheet in half and wrap it around the tube.
4. Continue wrapping the leaves around the bud until the flower is quite full.
5. Wrap a thread around the base of the bud to prevent the flower from falling apart.

Using this method, you can make any number of flowers, which are then simply collected into a bouquet.

Topiaries can be made from a variety of materials. You can often find crafts made from coffee, banknotes, sweets, hearts, etc. This version of topiary involves the use of maple leaves.

So, what is needed for topiary:

• pot;
• wooden stick for the trunk;
• a foam or foam ball as a base;
• gypsum;
• dye;
• hot glue;
• elements for decoration.

The procedure for creating an autumn topiary looks like this:

1. The stick must be inserted into the pot and secured tightly with gypsum mortar. As a result, the structure will be strong and stable.
2. Paint the pot and stick a color you like, such as gold to match the leaves.
3. We attach a foam ball to the top of the stick - this is the future crown of the tree.
4. Stick the required number of leaves into the ball. For decoration, you can use berry bunches, ribbons, beads, as well as artificial twigs and flowers. To make the leaf stems more durable, they must first be soaked in a hot solution of glycerin (1 to 2) and left in this form for 10 days in a dark, cool place .
5. Next, we decorate the trunk and soil of the tree using dry moss, bark, and beads.

How to make a decorative autumn wreath

You can weave a beautiful wreath from bright autumn leaves to decorate windows, doors, walls, etc. A wreath attached to the front door will delight not only you, but also your guests.

What you will need for the craft:

• flexible branches of any tree;
• dried leaves of different colors (contrasting combinations, for example, yellow and red, look best);
• bunches of red berries (rowan, viburnum, etc.);
• physalis;
• glue;
• spool of strong threads;
• decorative metallized threads;
• small bird figurines for bouquets.

How to weave a wreath:

1. The branches will serve as a frame - make a round or oval wreath out of them.
2. For strength, secure the structure with thread in several places.
3. Wrap the frame tightly with gold thread, leaving small branches free.
4. Glue the leaves to the branches.
5. Attach the berry clusters using thread.
6. Glue or wrap physalis with threads.
7. Finally, attach the birds to the wreath.

A finished craft made from leaves in the form of a wreath can be hung anywhere in the house; it will delight you with its beauty for a long time and remind you of the most colorful time of the year.

Beautiful autumn leaves can be used not only for simple children’s crafts, but also for complete interior decoration. One such product is a fruit bowl.

To make such a vase you need:

• glue and brush;
• inflatable ball;
• petrolatum;
• scissors;
• maple leaves.

Step-by-step instructions:

1. Inflate the balloon to the size you need.
2. Lubricate the surface of the ball with Vaseline, this is necessary so that the leaves do not stick to it during the process and are easily separated from it.
3. Fix the ball in a stationary state, this will make it more convenient for you to make your vase.
4. Glue maple leaves to the ball, having first generously coated them with glue.
5. To make the vase strong enough, you will need several layers of maple leaves.
6. As soon as the last layer is completed, carefully coat the product with glue again and leave for 3 days.
7. Burst or deflate the balloon and remove any remaining residue from the product.

The original interior decoration is ready.

Photo frame in autumn style

Children love decorating the walls of their room with their drawings and favorite photographs. A craft made from leaves in the form of a frame is perfect to complement the design of the room. Help your child decorate a frame with autumn leaves, where he will then place his favorite photo.

For the craft you need:

• thick cardboard;
• glue;
• leaves you like;
• pencil;
• scissors.

How to make a frame:

1. Cut a square or rectangular frame of the desired size from cardboard. The center of the frame where the photo will be placed needs to be cut slightly smaller than the size of the photo.
2. To wrap a frame with leaves, first soak them in hot water, this will soften them and prevent them from tearing or breaking in the process.
3. Glue the leaves onto the frame.
4. Wait for the product to dry.

When the frame is ready, insert the photo into it, securing it with glue or tape.

Applications from autumn leaves

Appliques are one of the simplest types of crafts made from dried leaves. Using leaves of different shapes and sizes, you can create real pictures, which will then become a decoration for your home. You can make a whole series of panels united by a common theme. These can be animals, landscapes, etc. Next, several small master classes will be presented on making applications in the form of an owl, the Firebird, a fish and a lion.

Owl

To make an applique with an image of an owl, you will need:

• small leaves of brown tones (for this you can use oak, willow, birch);
• colored paper;
• a small twig of thuja;
• sheet of cardboard;
• a bunch of rowan berries;
• any tree branch;
• glue.

Before starting work, the leaves and berries must be dried. Once all the materials are ready, it’s time to move on to the most important thing:

1. Cut out the outline of an owl from cardboard.
2. Birch or oak leaves will represent the ears and paws of an owl; glue them in the right places.
3. For feathers, use long, narrow willow leaves.
4. Cut out eyes and beak from colored paper and glue them on.
5. Glue your owl onto a tree branch, which will become a stand for the craft.

For additional decoration, you can use moss or thuja branches. You can also use rowan trees as owl paws. The product is ready.

Firebird

For the Firebird applique you will need:

• paper;
• leaves of linden, birch and rosehip;
• pumpkin seeds;
• thuja twigs.

And here's what the process itself looks like:

1. A linden leaf is glued to the place where the bird's body will be.
2. Birch leaf - head.
3. Rosehip leaves are glued individually onto the tail.
4. Whole sprigs of rose hips will serve as an additional decoration for the tail.
5. Glue birch leaves to the body, these will be the wings.
6. Eyes are made from pumpkin seeds, as well as decorations for the body and tail of the Firebird.
7. The final stage is a tuft from a thuja twig or any other suitable plant.

The firebird is ready.

a lion

Children love different animals, so they will be especially interested in making one of their familiar animals.

What you will need for the lion cub:

• rounded yellow linden leaves;
• black felt-tip pen;
• ash seeds;
• horse chestnut (nuts);
• glue;
• small pine branch;
• scissors;
• a sheet of yellow paper;
• sheet of orange cardboard.

Having collected all the necessary materials, it’s time to start making crafts:

1. Draw a lion's head on yellow paper or print the image on a printer and cut it out along the outline.
2. For the mane, use linden leaves, gluing them around the head.
3. Draw a nose for the lion and glue a chestnut in its place.
4. Pine needles will be used for the mustache.
5. The ash seed will represent a tongue.

As soon as the craft dries, it will be completely ready.

Fish

What child doesn't know about the goldfish that grants wishes? Making crafts with your own hands will be very entertaining for your child.

To make a fish craft you will need:

• dry leaves of quince and linden, brown and yellow in color, respectively;
• glue;
• marker;
• ash seeds;
• acorns;
• paper scissors;
• sheet of blue paper.

How to do:

1. Draw the outline of the fish on blue paper and cut it out.
2. Make scales from linden leaves and glue them to the body of the fish.
3. Use brown quince leaves to decorate the tail.
4. Using acorn caps, draw the outline of the fish’s head.

That's it, the real goldfish is ready.

How to make a children's applique “Autumn Landscape”

Step 1. Prepare the background of the postcard. The postcard is made on watercolor paper, which Varya toned with gouache (white + blue).

The first version of the children's applique “Hedgehog”

Tatyana and Varenka took a picture of a Hedgehog without needles with them for a walk and collected leaves, attached them to the image and tried them on right on the street. Then at home they dried it in a book and decorated the hedgehog. This is what they did!

Another idea for making a “Hedgehog” applique was shared with us by Ovchinnikova Marina Viktorovna (Krasnoyarsk Territory, Norilsk) and her son Timofey (5 years old, MADOU “Kindergarten No. 45 “Smile”). Marina and Timofey’s craft is called “Hedgehog with Autumn Leaves”

The second version of the children's autumn applique “Hedgehog with autumn leaves”

This is a large hedgehog applique or autumn panel that can be used to decorate a room.

Material: cardboard hedgehog, dry leaves and flowers, buttons.

How to make a hedgehog:
Step 1. Cut out the hedgehog’s body from cardboard, draw eyes and a nose.

Step 2: Choose the autumn leaves you like and glue them to the back of the hedgehog. We form needles on the hedgehog’s back from the corners of the leaves.

This idea was shared at our Autumn Workshop competition by Svetlana Kuznetsova and her son Artemy (2 years 2 months).

How to make an applique with children:

Step 1. Preparing the leaves.

The longest process is drying flowers and leaves. We dried it between magazine pages.

Step 2. Girl figurine - autumn.

Glue a picture of a girl of a size suitable for the frame onto the background. From dry leaves and flowers we form an outfit for Autumn.

We decorated the flower on Autumn's head with sequins.

Step 3. Place the finished autumn applique in a frame under glass. This is what Yaroslav did.

No. 6. Children's autumn applique of leaves: “View from the window”

This application was made and sent to our competition by Alexandra Albertovna Naumkina and her children: son Ivan (4 years old) and daughter Maria (1 year and 3 months) from Barnaul, Altai Territory.

How to make the “View from the Window” application with your children:

Step 1. First we make the background - draw the sky (Masha helped for 1 year and 3 months).

Step 2. Then we draw the birds in the sky (my mother did this).

Step 3. Cut out the window frame.

Step 4. Together with the children, we glue the “forest” - autumn leaves - at the bottom of the picture. Glue them with PVA glue.

Step 5. Glue a frame on top of the finished applique. And we put the finished work under a thick book so that everything dries well and sticks evenly.

No. 7. Children's autumn applique: “It's me”

This craft was also sent to our Autumn Workshop competition by Alexandra Naumkina. She writes: “The craft is simple, but the children really like it. I took a photo of my son on my mobile phone and emailed the photo to myself. I opened the email on my laptop and printed out the photo. My son cut out his silhouette and pasted it on a white sheet of paper. Then we glued some leaves. It seemed to us that there were few of them. Using a stationery knife, I cut out a stamp in the shape of a leaf from an elastic band. My son quickly put some leaves on our craft.”

Children's autumn applique No. 8: sailboat

This children's autumn applique from leaves was made by Georgy Osolikhin (5 years 10 months), and his work was sent to our children's autumn crafts competition by Georgy's mother Marina Osolikhin.

The applique uses leaves and seeds (to place the sun in the sky).

Children's autumn leaf applique No. 9: butterfly

Other materials can be used in leaf applique, such as in this children's Butterfly applique. The application was made by German Osolikhin (3 years 11 months) with his mother. Herman’s mother, Marina Osolikhina, sent an application to our competition.

Here is another version of an autumn appliqué made from leaves in the shape of a butterfly. This work was completed and sent to our autumn crafts competition by little Sofia (5 years old) and her mother Anna Shikhareva. How to make such a butterfly:

You will need:

- A4 cardboard (base for applique),

- PVA glue,

- scissors,

— leaves for wings: 4 different types of leaves in pairs,

- an acorn hat for the head,

- 2 acorns for the body.

Progress of the application step by step:

Step 1. Glue two leaves of the same type onto the background as upper wings. Below them, glue the lower wings - 2 leaves of a different type.
Step 2. Glue two acorns in the middle between the leaves to make the body of a butterfly
Step 3. Glue the acorn cap on top of the body. This will be the butterfly's head. Using a black marker, draw butterfly eyes and a mouth on the head.
Step 4. Make mustaches. To do this, glue 2 petioles from the leaves.
Step 5. When the wings are dry, they can be decorated with smaller leaves and a different color. Now the application is ready!

Children's autumn applique from leaves No. 10: bun, rooster

These applications were completed by children from MBOU Secondary School No. 5 (secondary group No. 11 “Stargazers”), Tyumen Region, Yugorsk. The application for our autumn competition of children's crafts “Autumn Workshop” was sent by the teacher of the middle group Petushkova Lyubov Anatolyevna.

Children's autumn applique of leaves No. 11: autumn vase

This master class was sent to our competition of autumn children's crafts by Yulia Yuryevna Zainetdinova (Republic of Bashkortostan, Sterlitamak city. Municipal budgetary educational institution of additional education for children - Center for Extracurricular Activities "Nadezhda" of the urban district of Sterlitamak)

Children's age: 3-4 years.

Materials: fresh and dry autumn leaves (preferably in different colors), a sheet with an image of the outline of a vase, PVA glue, a brush and a good mood!

Application technique:

Stage 1. “Dressing up the vase.”

We rub the dry leaves with our fingers (at the same time we train fine motor skills and tactile sensitivity), apply a layer of PVA glue to the outline of the vase and sprinkle with leaves. Here our vase is ready.

Stage 2. “Filling the vase.”

From a set of fresh leaves, children choose the ones they like, then use a brush and glue to fill the vase, creating their own unique composition.

Children's autumn applique No. 12: hedgehog under an autumn tree

Master class by Yulia Yurievna Zainetdinova from the Republic of Bashkortostan (Nadezhda Center for Extracurricular Activities of the Sterlitamak Urban District)

Children's age: 5-6 years.

Materials for application:

— autumn leaves are fresh and dry (preferably in different colors),

- rowan bunches,

- maple or ash seeds, so-called “helicopters” for hedgehog needles,

- a sheet with an image of the outline of a tree and a hedgehog,

- PVA glue,

- brush,

- plasticine

- and a good mood!

Appliqué technique for children: step-by-step description

Stage 1. “Dressing the tree in autumn attire”

From a set of leaves, children choose the ones they like, then use a brush and glue to “dress up” the tree.

Stage2. “Bring the hedgehog to life”

We roll plasticine balls and dress up the hedgehog, then we stick needles from “helicopters” into these balls.

Stage 3. “We decorate with rowan berries”

Stage4. "Autumn Land." Sprinkle the bottom of the picture with crushed dry leaves (see description of Yulia Yurievna’s previous master class on this page).

Application of autumn leaves: idea No. 13. Flowers

You can make a pattern or mandala from autumn leaves. You will get original flowers. These are the flowers made by Sofia (5 years old) and her mother Anna Shikhareva.

How to make a flower mandala:

MANDALA “Flower” (bottom photo in the illustration)

You will need: A4 size cardboard, 4 pieces of different types of leaves (yellow and brown), pine needles, PVA glue, acorn hat.

How to make an application: First glue the leaves in a circle, alternating in color. Next, glue the acorn cap into the middle. Finally, decorate your pattern by gluing green pine needles onto it.

MANDALA “Autumn Eye” (top photo in the illustration).

It is done by analogy with the “Flower” mandala.

You will need: A4 size cardboard, PVA glue, two pairs (four pieces each) of different types of leaves: 4 yellow, 4 green, 4 smaller brown and 4 smaller green, an acorn cap and 4 sprigs of dry grass such as feather grass.

How to make an application: As in the previous work, you first need to glue leaves of contrasting colors, alternating them by color. Then glue an acorn cap into the middle of the flower. When the leaves are dry, glue smaller leaves of a different color on top, place two branches of feather grass and secure them at the top and bottom to form an “eye” shape.

We present to your attention 2 methods of skeletonizing autumn leaves.

With the first option, the activity will not be very pleasant, and work will need to start at least 3 weeks before creating the craft. If you are ready for this, then try it.

For this method, take a container, put foliage in it, pour in warm water and close the whole thing with a lid. In a warm place, such leaves quickly begin to rot. In this case, the flesh of the leaf is most likely destroyed, and the hard veins are the least affected by this process.

After 3 weeks we need to remember our leaves. Clean water is poured into a basin and raw materials are placed there. You need to very carefully clean off the rot, trying not to damage the veins. You should try to remove all excess that cannot be removed with your hands using a toothbrush. Skeletonized leaves are placed under pressure and dried.

As you can see, it's not a very pleasant experience. Again, in our lives it is not always possible to prepare in advance, so there is another method - much faster!

In the second option, you need to boil the leaves in a soda solution.

To do this, dissolve 200 grams of washing soda powder in 600 ml of warm water. Prepared leaves are immersed in the mixture and cooked for an hour and a half on low heat.

After time has passed, this liquid is poured out, clean water is poured into the pan and cooking continues for about 30 minutes.

Use a fork to check the condition of the sheet. We finish when the separation of the pulp from the veins becomes free.

Now let’s take out the leaves and carefully, without pressing, wipe them. Some parts may not separate; in this case, boil the raw materials again. Remove from the “broth” carefully, because the leaves are very fragile and can collapse! Dry as in the first option.

Before work, the leaf skeletons can be ironed and then applied with dye - gouache, egg dyes, watercolor, spray paint. Bright colors are welcome, because a peacock made of leaves cannot be dull!

You can bleach them with regular “Whiteness”.

DIY peacock made from leaves

To create a bright panel, prepare a sheet of light-colored cardboard, velvet cardboard, scissors and leaves.

Draw a semicircle on the cardboard in the middle - this will be a sketch of the tail. Squeeze out the glue along the largest arc and very quickly, without letting the glue harden, lay out the leaves.

To make the work fun, first sort all the leaves by size and shade.

Let the first row be made of ordinary leaves, but the second and all subsequent ones can be laid out from skeletonized ones.

Once the entire surface of the tail is filled, cut out the silhouette of the bird from black velvet cardstock and glue it on top of the leaves.

Peacock made of maple leaves and plasticine

It’s even easier to make such a bird, you just need to remember your modeling lessons! It’s even better if your baby helps you make the body, neck and head.

To do this, you need to take blue plasticine and knead it, and then make the desired shape.

For the tail, collect maple leaves - the brightest and most beautiful ones. But all fallen leaves have an unpleasant feature - they dry out and warp, losing their delightful appearance. To prevent this from happening in your case, prepare them - preserve them in glycerin or coat them with wax.

Stick several leaves into the tail part of the plasticine body so that they peek out from one another. For the head, you can make a tuft from a twig.

Create the legs from sticks and acorn caps.

Cut out a small stand from thick cardboard and paint it green or stick on green paper. Glue a peacock made of leaves onto it.

What materials will be needed for the craft?

• Opened pine cone;
• Medium size acorn;
• Large dried maple leaf of any color;
• Small colorful leaves;
• Plasticine.

How to make a peacock from natural material?

As you can see, the craft consists entirely of natural material. The only exception is plasticine, but this was used to a minimum.

To begin, glue the acorn to the side of the pine cone and a stand, thanks to which the peacock will hold a vertical position. It is better to make them from not very bright plasticine, for example, brown.

Next, make a beautiful peacock tail. Here you can show all your imagination and make, in fact, an applique of leaves, using small pieces of plasticine or PVA glue for gluing. You can stick smaller leaves of various colors onto a large maple leaf; even rowan berries attached to the edges of the maple leaf would be a good idea.

Make a small cone-beak from orange plasticine, and eyes from white and black. Glue these parts to the bird, attach a chic tail to the pine cone, and a small leaf on the head, which will serve as a crest.

The peacock made from natural material is ready. We made such a bird in kindergarten; the leaf successfully remained unchanged for about two days. If you need to preserve it for a longer period of time, you can try laminating the sheet with tape. Just paste it completely, trim around the edges. Or using an iron and a special lamination film.
