Loved ones for the New Year, everything can still be corrected - Valentine's Day is ahead on February 14 and February 23, Defender of the Fatherland Day. But before you start knitting, you will have to perform a boring but necessary procedure - knitting a sample. How to make it more fun, says the author of an American best-selling book about knitting.

If you are an inexperienced or perhaps unsuccessful knitter, you will need to read this chapter (short but insightful) or you will be lost.

Density is a key knitting parameter. It means how many loops, whole or fractional, you get, only you and no one but you, in 10 cm of knitted fabric, knitted from the yarn and on the knitting needles that you plan to use.

Each yarn has an optimal density for each specific purpose, and this density is stated at the beginning of the job description. If you are going to follow the instructions, you simply must achieve the specified density: adjust the thickness of the knitting needles until you succeed.

At the risk of incurring the wrath of the pillars of the knitting community, I will emphasize once again: consider everything that is written in knitting books about the recommended knitting needle size as a general guideline, nothing more.

People knit so differently - some tighter, some looser - that there is no reason to offer knitting needles of the same thickness to everyone. Unfortunately, the recommended knitting needle size is usually the largest one that can achieve a given density, and in order to achieve it, the gullible beginner is forced to knit too tightly.

For example, it is often recommended to knit with medium-thick yarn using 5 mm needles; the typical stockinette density of such yarn is 20 stitches per 10 cm. I myself knit moderately loosely and can easily get the same density on thinner 3.5 mm needles. I don’t see the point in wasting your nerves and knitting very tightly on thick knitting needles just because that size was written in a book. I like to knit loosely so I can get the gauge I want on thinner needles and I encourage you to try the same.

Before starting a full-size project, you must knit a sample, to find out what density you are knitting with. I know, I know, you can’t stand this thing! So start a larger swatch and call it a header. Then it will become useful and, perhaps, even be popular. Oh, and you don't have to finish this hat before you start the sweater: a few centimeters is plenty for the measurements.

For a circular knitting pattern, a hat works even better. For many of us, the knit stitches are tighter than the purl stitches, or vice versa, and the hat is knitted in the round using only the knit stitches - just like the future sweater.

So, if the description indicates a density of 20 loops per 10 cm, cast on approximately 90 loops on circular needles 40 cm long and knit 7-10 cm with the selected pattern. Take out the knitting needles and lay out the work on a flat surface. Using a ruler, measure 10 cm horizontally in the middle of the sample and insert two pins exactly along the edges. Now count the number of loops between the pins. One loop is like a V, two loops are like two VVs, and so on. Do not neglect half and even a third loop, if any.

The resulting number will be the knitting density.

You can do this only if you never intend to erase the result. Otherwise, the sample should be processed in the same way as it is planned to do with the finished product, otherwise after the first contact with water it may either increase in size or decrease. However, with the wool from which Elizabeth Zimmerman usually knitted, this practically does not happen, which explains the described procedure for working with the sample.

Next, if the instructions indicate a density of 20 loops per 10 cm, you must achieve exactly the same density, otherwise the sweater will turn out to be a different size. If, when determining the density, you are mistaken by just one loop, a sweater made of 200 loops, designed for a girth of 100 cm, will turn out to be 5 cm wider or, on the contrary, narrower, which is not at all suitable.

So if you get 20 loops of 10 cm, great; with a density of 21 loops or more, the fabric will be too dense, and less than 20 loops will be too loose.

If the density is greater than the calculated one, take knitting needles one size larger; if the density is less than the calculated one, take knitting needles one size smaller. Repeat until you have exactly 20 stitches per 10 cm.

When you come up with your own model, there is no need to adjust the density. It is quite possible that you will prefer a harder or more plastic sample. So determine the density with which it is made, multiply this number by the girth of the future sweater, divide by 10 - and you will get the number of stitches in the cast-on row.

It's very simple. But it is extremely important.

(P.S. It's best not to finish that hat before the sweater in case you need some more of this yarn.)

(P.P.S. Many instructions also indicate the density of knitting in rows. I have never found a use for it, since vertical measurements are much easier to make in centimeters.)

Knitted sneakers in the style of a famous brand will look very bright on a child’s feet. Even adults will envy such shoes. Booties can be made from thin yarn or a denser, thicker thread, thanks to which the sneakers will warm the baby's feet in the autumn-winter period. The shoes are designed for children aged 6 months to 1 year.

To work you need

  • knitting needles;
  • hook;
  • needle.

Step-by-step instruction

  1. Cast on 40 stitches on two knitting needles with white yarn. We form the first line only with knit stitches, the second - with purl stitches. In the third row we make an increase through broaching: one at the beginning, at the end and 2 in the middle, all other loops are formed with knit stitches (36 pcs.).

    Cast on a number of loops

    Making several rows

  2. The fourth row consists entirely of purl stitches. We create the 5th line in the likeness of the 3rd row. We make two additional loops in the middle with a gap of 4 knits. We form the 6th row by purling.
  3. We make the seventh row according to the scheme: addition - 18 persons. - addition - 6 persons. – addition – 18 persons. – addition. Row 8 is similar to row 6.
  4. The ninth row also has increases at the beginning, after 18 knits, after 8 knits and at the end. From rows 10 to 16 inclusive, we knit with knit stitches.
  5. Take blue yarn. We attach the thread at the beginning of the workpiece and after 36 loops, a white thread is fixed between these intervals.

    Switching to blue yarn

  6. In the 17th row we knit 18 faces. blue stitches, 18 white stitches, then 18 blue knit stitches again.
  7. Row 18 starts with k18. loops, then there are 18 purl stitches with white yarn, finishing the line with 18 knit stitches.
  8. We knit the 19th row according to the pattern with knit stitches only: 18 blue + 18 white + 18 blue.
  9. In the 20th row we knit purl stitches in white and knit stitches in blue.

    Knit stitches are knitted in blue

  10. We form the 21st line completely with knit stitches (corresponding to the previous color). The next row starts with knit 18, purl 18 and knit 18.
  11. Row 23 has decreases. After 18 blue knit stitches, you need to knit the white piece with knit 2 stitches together (5 times), finishing the row with 18 knit stitches in blue yarn. We knit the 24th row, except for 9 white purl stitches.
  12. In the 25th row we form 18 blue knit stitches, decrease by 2 knit stitches together (5 repeats), grabbing 1 blue loop, then knit 17 blue loops. 26th line – 17 knit in blue, 5 purl in white + 18 knit in blue.
  13. Row 27 consists of 16 knit stitches. Using the third knitting needle we knit 8 knit stitches, creating the ninth loop from the broach (this will be the tongue of the sneaker). We knit 15 additional blue rows in garter stitch.

Any mother knows that there is no such thing as too much children's clothing, because you want to dress your baby beautifully and fashionably. If the baby has not yet grown enough to wear real shoes, then knitted booties will be indispensable. Currently, there are many options for knitting such an attribute of a children's wardrobe. They will look original, because you choose the color and style of the booties yourself. And the baby will be comfortable and warm in such shoes. If you follow fashion, then you know such a stylish brand as adidas. You can easily knit Adidas booties with knitting needles, the diagram and description of which are described in detail in the article. Even adults will pay attention to such an accessory for your child. Therefore, you can spend the evening knitting Adidas booties without even thinking about it. They are designed for a child from six months to one year.

To start knitting Adidas booties, you will need:
- blue yarn;
- white yarn;
- hook;
- needle.

Let's start knitting cool Adidas booties by casting on stitches on knitting needles. Cast on 40 stitches on two needles. We knit the first row with knit stitches, the second row with purl stitches. In the third row, we begin to make increases through broaching: at the beginning one, at the end one and in the middle 2. The remaining loops are knit stitches (36 pieces).

4th row - purl.

5th row, same as 3rd. In the middle, additional loops must be made with a gap of 4 knits.

6th row: purl.

7th row: add, knit 18, add, knit 6, add, knit 18, add.

Row 8 – purl.

9th row: increase at the beginning, knit 18, increase, knit 8, increase, knit 18, increase, and add at the end.

Rows 10-16 – knit stitches.

We knitted this with white yarn, and now we take blue. The thread must be attached first and after 36 loops between the spaces we fix the white thread.

Making the transition to the blue thread

17th row: 18 knit blue yarn, 18 white yarn, 18 knit blue yarn.

18th row: knit 18, purl 18 with white yarn, knit 18.

19th row: knit only: 18 blue, 18 white, 18 blue.

20th row: purls are white, knits are blue.

The knit stitches are knitted in blue.

21st row: knit stitches (color same as last row)

22nd row: knit 18, purl 18, knit 18.

23rd row: make decreases. Knit 18 blue stitches, knit white stitches 2 together 5 times, knit 18 blue stitches.

24th row: knit, except for 9 white ones - purl.

25th row: knit 18 blue stitches, knit 2 together 5 times, catching 1 blue, 17 blue.

26th row: 17 knit in blue, 5 purl in white yarn, 18 knit in blue.

27th row: knit 16. We take the third knitting needle and knit 8 knit stitches, and make the 9th loop from the broach (this will be the tongue of the Adidas bootie). Work 15 additional rows using garter stitch blue yarn.

Add a white thread and make 10 more rows as well.

11th row: 2 together, knit 5, 2 together, turn the product over - close the loops.

Now we just need to knit the side parts of the Adidas booties with knitting needles. Make 4 rows using blue garter stitch yarn. Reducing stitches: edge, knit, decrease, knit.

Repeat 3 more rows

Two stitches together, knit 2 rows, bind off the stitches.

We do the same on the second side of the booties. Cut the thread, leaving a long end.

Fold the resulting bootie and sew it. Now take a hook and white thread to tie the top of the Adidas bootie. Sew stripes with white thread, like on the Adidas emblem. And on the tongue you can also do embroidery with blue thread.

Lace up the booties and you're ready for stylish slippers.

They will look great paired with sportswear. You can believe that more than one mother will ask you for Adidas knitting needles for her child, because this is a cool part of a child’s wardrobe.
