Magnetic New Year's sock - step-by-step instructions

A New Year's sock on a magnet is not only decor for the refrigerator. This is also a fun idea for stacking candies and daily treats ahead of the New Year. The main thing is to find a suitable small box for household chemicals or office supplies.

In the West, there is a tradition: at Christmas time, hang boots and socks on the fireplace and stairs. According to legend, Santa Claus, entering the house through the chimney, places sweets and gifts on them. To prevent Santa from mixing anything up, each item must be signed. Alas, they are not often found in Russian apartments, but the Christmas boot, a kind and bright symbol of the New Year holidays, has migrated to us.

Do you want to make it yourself and please the kids with sweets from Santa? It's simple. You can use multi-colored wool socks and decorate them with beads, pompoms or bows.

A more complicated option is to sew it from fabric using a sewing machine. And little crafters and needlewomen will be able to make a New Year's boot from felt (with the help of adults).

Craft felt is sold in multi-colored sheets at craft stores. It can also be purchased from online stores. One sheet is just enough for half a New Year's boot. Here's how to make them.

Make a pattern (you can download it) and transfer it to paper. Then cut out fabric pieces along it. Stitch the parts and sew on decorative elements. Now you can further decorate the product by trimming the edges with curly scissors. This is what happened!

But these are very tiny ones made of felt.

You can use anything as a material - pieces of fabric, an old blanket, even drawing paper (as the most non-standard option).

Those who know how to knit can easily crochet booties using a single crochet stitch.

Using socks as packaging for sweet gifts for children is one of the most popular and interesting New Year's ideas. And most importantly, children adore such packaging, keep them for years, and then hang them in the children's room for decoration and in the hope that Santa Claus will bring more gifts and put them in all the socks hanging in the house.

Making your own Christmas stocking for a gift is very easy. For this you will need the following materials:

  • red and green (white can be used instead of green) fabric,
  • fabric with a New Year themed pattern,
  • felt,
  • scissors,
  • needles,
  • thick threads for decorative external seams and thin threads for sewing parts together.

First, let's decide on the main color of the craft, let the New Year's sock 2016 be traditionally red. We lay out the double fabric on the table, folding the right sides towards each other and transfer the sock pattern onto it. For the edge of the sock, you need to cut out 1 piece from fabric of a contrasting color - green or white.

Then we sew the parts together, you need to stitch the edge of the sock on top and do the most interesting thing - the decoration. You can decorate Christmas socks:

  • embroidered with the name of the child for whom the children's gift is intended. To do this, you need to embroider a name with large floss threads on beige fabric.
  • from soft felt, cut out a snowman, elk, deer, monkey - the symbol of 2016, snowflakes.
  • buy small New Year's soft toys and sew them onto a New Year's stocking.

What other Christmas socks can you make?

  • If you know how to knit, you can easily knit New Year's socks 2016 from red and white threads, decorating the top with snowflakes, Christmas trees and deer.
  • From paper - pick up a beautiful New Year's scrap paper and cut out a sock from it. On white round napkins - cup holders, write the numbers until the New Year and you will get the simplest Advent calendar.

Hanging New Year's (Christmas) socks by the fireplace on the eve of the winter holidays is a tradition, although not Russian, but so cute! Therefore, if your children are as attracted to the Christmas stocking as they are to mine, we take fabric and thread with a needle and get to work! The degree of a child’s participation in joint creativity can be easily determined by his age and skills: if he knows how to use scissors, he can cut out a workpiece, if he has learned/learned how to use a needle, he can take up sewing, and if for now he can only watch, then instruct the child to give you the details , threads and more. Well, let's try to make a New Year's stocking for gifts with our own hands.

New Year's sock: pattern and necessary materials

You will need the following materials:

  • a piece of red fabric (about 1 m by 1 m, in this case gabardine);
  • fabric of any color for the lining (I have lining silk);
  • padding polyester;
  • cardboard;
  • a piece of green felt (usually sold in A4 sheets, one sheet is enough);
  • decor (we have 2 bells, ribbons, beads);
  • a small piece of thin elastic;
  • scissors.

First, draw the initial pattern of our sock on cardboard and cut it out.

Then, using the resulting pattern, we make two patterns each from padding polyester, gabardine and lining silk. You should get six identical templates, two each from the same material.

How to sew a New Year's (Christmas) sock: stages of work

Now we take one pattern of each type and put them together.

This is one side of our future sock. We baste and sew by machine or by hand. We do the same with the rest of the patterns. Then we sew both sides inside out and turn them inside out.

Now we take felt and cut out two small strips along the width of the neck of the sock for the sides (we got 15 cm in length and 4 cm in width). Carefully sew them with one edge inside the sock. This is how you get a sock with a turn-up. Instead of felt, you can use pieces of fur, if available.

The sock for New Year's gifts is almost ready. You can decorate it and sew on a loop.

From the leftover felt we cut out traditional Christmas holly leaves (2-4 pieces) and sew them in the middle of the sock.

Then we fold the checkered ribbon into a bow and secure it to the leaves, and on top you can attach a ready-made red or white bow. A pair of bells and silver beads will complete the composition.

Especially in an unusual package - like a funny sock or a handmade boot hung from the mantelpiece or stair railing. Santa Claus's favorite shoes have become as important an attribute of the winter holidays as a Christmas tree with shiny tinsel or a bottle of champagne. We'll show you how to make and decorate a boot using scrap materials!

The story of the New Year's boot

The tradition of wrapping gifts in stockings and boots came to us from the West, where the place of Father Frost is taken by St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus. According to legend, he helped people unnoticed. One day Nikolai learned about three sisters who lived in poverty on the outskirts of the city. To help the girls, the Saint climbed to the roof of their house and threw three gold bars through the chimney.

Pieces of precious metal fell into the girls' stockings, which were drying over the fireplace. In the morning, a wonderful surprise awaited the sisters. They shared their joy with their neighbors, and they also hung stockings over the fireplace to receive a present from Nikolai. This tradition appeared in the 16th century and is gaining more and more popularity every year. Well, in modern houses where there is no fireplace, stockings or boots for gifts are attached next to the bed or Christmas tree.

Cardboard boots can be great!

Even a child can do the simplest decoration option. On the other hand, it gives room for imagination: the shape and decor of the product depend only on you. Prepare materials for creativity:
