Animal stencils for applique on fabric. Colorful appliqués made from fabrics. Adding volume to the figure

In the time of our grandmothers, girls were instilled with a love of needlework. They taught them to crochet and knit, embroider, and told them what fabric appliqué is and how to make it. Let's consider the last type of needlework in more detail.

Fabric applique is a way of decorating clothes, interior items, and creating panels. There are two answers to the question of how to make applique on fabric:

  1. Sew on.
  2. Paste.

In the first case, all parts are sewn on manually or using a sewing machine; in the second, they are glued with special glue.

To perform applications of any level of complexity and method of attachment, a standard set of tools and materials is required.

  • It is necessary to stock up on scraps of fabric of various colors, textures (denim and felt make beautiful flowers), sizes, and threads that match the color of the selected scraps.
  • You will need scissors of different sizes (large, small, with curved ends), a thimble, a hoop, a set of needles, pins (single and safety pins), and diagrams.
  • You also cannot do without cardboard or thick paper, carbon paper, pencil, or fabric chalk.

Before starting work, prepare the fabric. The base material should be dense enough and neutral in color so that all the colors of the composition look harmonious with it.

For panels, it is recommended to starch the background material. Thin fabrics from which the elements of the picture will be made must be compacted. Potato paste or gelatin is suitable for this. If you choose the first option, then heat the soaked fabric with an iron until it dries completely. In the second option, the material soaked in gelatin is pre-dried.

How to make an applique from fabric

Making fabric decor with your own hands is easy. To start working, you need to decide on a drawing. To do this, you can use your own imagination and draw the desired sketch. Or you can use ready-made diagrams by downloading them from the Internet.

  1. The image should not stand out from the general style of the basic item. The subject and color should be in harmony. Avoid an abundance of small details, this will not only complicate the work, but also give the effect of a blurry picture. You should not make appliqués on thin and delicate fabrics.
  2. Before printing the sketch, it is adjusted in size to the base item (jeans, shirt and other items of clothing, interior design). As a rule, computer programs help create the desired sketch size. After this, the images are printed in two copies: one serves as a template, the second as an example of the correct assembly of the drawing.
  3. It is convenient to transfer templates for applications onto cardboard, then the cardboard blanks are transferred to the flaps. The direction of the threads on the applique elements should be the same as on the base item. If necessary, provide seam allowances along the edges of the motifs. The sample can be transferred to the base using tracing paper to facilitate the process of assembling a complete picture.
  4. After choosing a picture, you need to select fabrics and other materials. The flaps must match in color and texture. The threads are matched to the tone of the fabric. When making appliqué on clothes, it is recommended to sew motifs on a sewing machine or by hand. Glue is used to make panels. In this creativity, it is worth abandoning silicone glue, because it deforms the material.

Assembling the plot

The assembly of the composition begins with basting ready-made motifs onto the product. The allowances that were left for the seams must be carefully folded inward. It should be remembered that the edge should not be very voluminous; one should try to eliminate the difference between the edge of the applique and its central part. You can avoid folding the seams at the edges. To do this, all the details of the composition are cut out in pairs, then sewn face to face, leaving a small gap in order to turn the part to the right side. After this, the hole is sewn up, the part becomes more voluminous. When the picture is basted, start finishing sewing.

The seam should be located along the edge of the parts with a 2mm indentation. It is more convenient to make oblique stitches so that you can hide loose threads. When sewing by hand, loop or chain stitches or stitches are performed, as in satin stitch embroidery. The outer border of the finished applique can be decorated with cord, embroidered with beads, sequins, placing additional emphasis on the decorative detail. If you decide to attach the decor using a sewing machine, then first the made parts must be fixed with glue. After this, the edge is stitched with a zigzag or thick seam.

Applications can be divided into two types:

  • Volumetric.
  • Flat.

Previously, the implementation of a flat picture was considered.

Volumetric application can also be done in several ways.

  • In the first, the picture is sewn to the main product, but at the same time a layer of batting or thin foam rubber is made between them.
  • In the second option, you make a pattern of the element in two copies, then the elements are folded front side to front side and stitched, leaving a small pocket. Through this hole, the motif is turned to the right side and filled with padding polyester. The filler layer should be small. Then the hole is sewn up, and the finished motif is sewn to the base.

Three-dimensional images are best made for children's clothing. But we must take into account that the three-dimensional image will have to be adjusted after several washes, since the filler can roll off.

Features of decorating thin fabrics

When decorating thin fabrics such as guipure, silk, chiffon, a lining is made from the fabric used to make the main product on the back side of the applique. The lining can be sewn in two ways:

  • “Face to face”, this method has already been described.
  • Insert the lining fabric into the hoop and attach the finished composition to it using safety pins. We sew by hand using a satin stitch or using a machine, performing a double stitch, or a “roller” seam.

Textile applique is one of the types of needlework, the technique of which consists in creating an image by attaching individual fabric parts to a base or fabric background.

Appliqué on fabric is used to make decorative panels, decorate children's clothing, decorate holiday costumes, toys and souvenirs. When selecting appliqué designs, it is necessary to take into account the correctness and recognition of their silhouette, the peculiarities of transferring the image on a plane, as well as the harmony of the color scheme of the image.

Applique on fabric "Native Land"

Applique on fabric originated in ancient times. Decorative elements on the costumes of many peoples around the world were created precisely by sewing patterns onto fabrics of contrasting colors. With the help of textile appliqué in ancient times, needlewomen decorated not only clothes, but also shoes, as well as many household items and home decor.

Using textile applique, you can successfully decorate many items:

  • Bedspreads for a sofa or bed
  • Chair covers
  • Small rugs
  • Wall panels
  • and much more.

Types of textile applique

Using the appliqué technique, a wide variety of images can be applied to fabrics. However, all applique designs can be divided into three types:

  • Subject application - consists of one or more individual images of any objects of living or inanimate nature. It could be a house, a star, a flower, a leaf, a tree, a branch, a mushroom, a basket, a bow, a car and much more.
A bird made from scraps is an example of an object textile applique
  • Subject application - involves composing an image from several elements in such a way that it clearly shows a set of actions or a sequence of events.

  • Decorative applique - This is a separate image of patterns or ornaments that can be used to decorate various items of clothing and household items.

Materials for appliqué on fabric

To create a textile appliqué, various types of fabric are used:

  • Drape
  • Cloth
  • Crinoline
  • Sackcloth
  • Knitwear

and many other types of both plain and colored fabrics. The main thing is that they are dense enough, hold the shape of the cut part well and do not stretch.

Suitable fibrous materials include soutache, thin or thick cord, and twine. Thick threads or yarn folded several times are also used, as well as threads pulled from the fabric taken for the base, or from smooth fabric that matches the base in color.

The pulled threads are also folded several times. In any case, the thickness of the bundle of folded threads depends on the size of the pattern and its nature. Drawings can be ornamental or thematic. The simple elements of Kirov and Vologda lace patterns look great.

The following types of materials can be used as additional elements of textile appliqué:

  • Leather- even the smallest pieces of different colors will do
  • Fur- you can use small trimmings
  • Felt- different colors
  • Suede- you can use pieces of suede from belts from old clothes
  • Braid decorative
  • Laces different colors
  • Sequins
  • Beads- large and small
  • Beads
  • Buttons- beautiful or unusually shaped.

Thus, to create a textile appliqué, you can use all types of materials that can be sewn on. And if your imagination suggests something else, you will end up with an original work.

Depending on the selected image, the parts for the applique are prepared separately, but it is possible to secure the material from a ball, skein, or pre-cut pieces of the required length (after preliminary calculation of the material).

Application technique

The selected pattern is transferred to the fabric using carbon paper. In the process of arranging the pattern, you need to ensure that the direction of the threads of the base fabric and the part coincide.

Textile appliqué is most often sewn by hand onto the base fabric using a blind stitch. If the work is done on a sewing machine, then it is best to use a zigzag stitch. These types of seams are almost invisible on the fabric, especially if you choose the right thread color to match the material.

In accordance with the pattern transferred to the background, the cord or rope must be basted to the background, and then secured on the reverse side with oblique or small stitches of the “forward needle” seam. Finished parts are also secured on the reverse side.

There is another way to attach fibrous materials to a soft base in applications. It's called "attached". The technique is as follows. Depending on the type of material used, the ends are secured so that they do not fall off.

Next, prepare the needle and thread. It can be a contrasting color or matched to the material. The end of the material is applied to the desired place of the pattern and at a distance of 1 - 2 mm, the end is secured on the wrong side of the fabric with transverse stitches.

Then the cord is taken to the side, stitched along the pattern line 8 - 10 mm with small stitches “forward needle”, the material is applied again and the cord is secured with two or three transverse stitches, laying the fabric. Threads folded several times are also fastened in a similar way.

You can make a voluminous applique from fabric. To do this, under each fragment of the image you need to lay padding polyester or another type of soft filler to give the picture the necessary relief. Volumetric appliqué is in many ways similar to the embroidery technique, which also involves obtaining a relief pattern.

“Poppies” - ribbon embroidery, the vase is made using the trapunto technique.

You can also attach a fabric applique to a base using a thermal method. To do this, a part similar in size to the main one, made of polyethylene, is placed between the background and the image. The image prepared in this way is ironed with a hot iron.

The basis for the fabric can be decorated in various ways. The side edges are folded twice by 10 mm, basted, hemmed with a simple hem or decorated with any decorative seam on top.

The upper part is best secured to a stick with a round or rectangular cross-section. Alternatively, you can use thick wire, the ends of which protrude beyond the edges of the product by 2 - 2.5 cm.

The bottom side of the resulting work is decorated with fringe of any width, drawing transverse threads. You can also hem the bottom edge of the work, and then sew on tassels, pom-poms or other decorations.

The hardest thing about decorating children's clothing is the idea of the design. So, fabric applique, templates for this you will find in the photo below under the cut.

The diagrams are very simple, you can use any graphic editor to leave only the outlines themselves, and then enlarge the picture, print it, or draw it on cardboard (thick paper) by hand in the desired size. Cut out the details.

Now all that’s left to do is decide on the material for decorating things, find threads that match the color, and get a sewing machine.

Decorating clothes with applique

I took ideas for decorating children's things from German children's stores. Everyone is there, but when it comes down to it, if you urgently need or just want to modify a child’s everyday things, please him, make him special, original, unique, then a clear idea for implementation does not always appear in his head. Sitting at home, you can look at photographs and find the desired drawing that you like in some way.

To begin with, the applique is a moose. It is interesting because the zipper divides it vertically into two parts. It looks no less interesting if the jacket is unbuttoned and its halves separate. The simplest shirt fabric, red checkered, was used. Therefore, the drawing turned out to be very New Year’s, thoughts immediately arise about northern countries, snow, Santa Claus, and gifts for Christmas and New Year!

We sell red caps here for the winter holidays. Many are worn on the street - they create a festive atmosphere, especially in the evenings, walking through the Christmas market. It’s interesting that almost no one wears hats here, but if it’s cold, you can see a lot of people on the street wearing such pointed hats. Why am I saying this? And the fact that this cap will go very well with the picture on the jacket.

Another cute animal - I think it's a squirrel (remember the cartoon?). There is not only the applique itself, but also partly embroidery; they often come together. The stencil is simple, you can easily repeat this one yourself. The main thing is big eyes with dotted pupils!

Children's pictures for embroidery and applique

Now a couple of works of a slightly different nature. They buy with their deliberate simplicity and even carelessness in execution. Please note that the fabric for applique of a fungus, a bird, a mouse is not even processed along the contours! It is sewn on with one or two straight stitches on a machine using only black thread.

The technique is almost the same, but almost everything is embroidered using satin stitch or simple machine stitches. Tree, fox, bunny, squirrel - a good children's stencil. It looks simple and at the same time very elegant.

How to make a stencil? I'll tell you a little secret. Make an image on your monitor at the scale you need. Take thin paper or white translucent tracing paper and apply it to the screen. Carefully (without pressing!) outline the silhouette of the drawing; this can be done, for example, with a felt-tip pen. That’s it, the “pattern” of your future fabric appliqué, the template is ready for use.

Small and large applications with animals that you can easily repeat for your children. There is a hedgehog, a baby raccoon, a panda, a dinosaur, a giraffe looking out of a pocket, and a taxi car. If cars are only suitable for boys, then images of animals will also delight girls. All these motifs look good if they are made using another technique - adding embroidery.

Another article from the series of decorating children's clothing, there are several photos with pictures of ready-made appliqués on knitted fabric. Templates can be copied onto tracing paper directly from the monitor, as I described at the end of this article. All images are simple, but expressive, bright, and if you wish, you can copy them yourself from photographs.

We will talk about women's knitwear, about decorating them with your own hands with fabric appliqué, there are several ready-made templates that you can download for yourself - a fish, a woodpecker on a tree, a geisha, bamboo branches, cherry blossoms, letters. Simple but interesting motifs with examples of their application on finished items.

We decorate children's clothes, this time only boys. Here are simple black and white diagrams of templates with vehicles - cars, taxis. You can download them to your computer, and then print them, and also carefully redraw them directly from the screen onto a sheet of very thin paper with a felt-tip pen - enlarge the picture to the required size, the contours will be clearly visible through the tracing paper.

A little more about simple but quite creative fabric appliqués. The template we use is a girl with a dog. You will need a stencil of a contour image (those who know how can draw it themselves), special paints, and a few scraps of different materials. Those who do not want to draw can embroider - such examples can be viewed by following the link.

Appliqué is considered to be the decoration of a finished fabric product by gluing or sewing on fabric figures, i.e. this technique performs a decorative function. The patterns proposed in this article will help you make applications in the shape of a flower and an owl. There are different execution techniques; by choosing one of them, the needlewoman will create a beautiful applique.

One of the most famous and widespread methods is to draw the details on cardboard, transfer them to fabric, and then cut out the parts using scissors, leaving room for hemming the seams. Next, it is advisable to attach the cut out parts to the product with pins.

When making seams, it is important to fold the edges correctly so that there is not too much fabric, and keep in mind that the stitches should go to the very edge of the part. If the parts are attached to the product not by hand, but using a sewing machine, then the cut out parts must first be glued, then the edges must be processed with a zigzag.

There is a way to make an applique without the need to turn and finish the seams; to do this, you need to cut out two blanks of each part, fold them with their right sides inward, and then stitch them together. Next, you need to make a cut to turn the parts inside out and then you can sew them to the product. In order for the pictures to be voluminous, it is worth using thick fabric to make parts.

DIY fabric applique "Flower"

Even children can make appliqué from fabric; there is nothing difficult about it. For example, you can make an applique in the shape of a flower; for this you need to think through the idea, purchase cardboard, scissors and thread with a needle. For convenience, you can prepare templates for children in advance. To do this, you need to draw the outlines of future parts on a sheet of cardboard, and then cut them out. Then the finished templates can be applied to the fabric and the necessary parts can be cut out.

To make a flower, you need to cut out five parts with some extra fabric for hemming and finishing the edges. When working with each part, you must first bend the edges and iron them, then attach the part with the wrong side to the product, secure with pins and baste. After this, the part should be sewn to the product using an invisible seam. The same principle works with other cut out parts. The result of the work is shown in the photo.

Owl

An owl made of felt can be an excellent addition to the interior of a children's room. In order to make such an applique, you will need felt of different colors, a heat gun, as well as scissors and a needle and thread.

Thanks to the master class, you will understand how to make an applique from fabric. First you need to prepare the base, then cut out the trunk and branches of the tree from brown felt. Then, according to the template, you need to cut out all the details of the owl, not forgetting that each detail corresponds to a specific color.

Then all the parts should be connected using a heat gun. First you need to glue the eyes to the body, then the nose, then the feathers and, finally, sew on the wings. After this, the edges of the resulting product must be processed. You can also cut out leaves and flowers from felt, making sure to trim the edges of the parts, and then glue first the tree, then the owl, then all the other parts onto the base.

Other options for making fabric appliqué with your own hands

The applique can be done by hand or can be made using a sewing machine. The video tutorials presented in this article will demonstrate master classes on making fabric appliqués by hand and using a sewing machine, with an explanation of how to make seams correctly.

A selection of photographs with easy-to-make appliqués on sofa cushions. To create an applique design, it is enough to have minimal drawing skills in order to make a sketch on paper.

What is an application? This is a type of embroidery. Appliqué embroidery consists of strengthening pieces of other material against a fabric background by sewing or gluing.

For appliqué, stylized drawings with a clear outline are always used, without unnecessary details. Samples for applique can be pictures from magazines or postcards, as was done when creating this panel with birds.

Materials for fabric applique All kinds of natural and synthetic fabrics of different textures can be used - smooth, fleecy, shiny, matte. Thin artificial and natural leather, fur, felt, felt, knitted cotton fabrics are ideal for applique - their advantages are that they have non-fraying cuts. Excellent results are obtained when using colored cotton fabrics such as calico, calico and linen.

Start work with a sketch of the painting. He is drawn life-size. Then a design is applied to a base of thick, well-ironed fabric through carbon paper. Next, prepare patterns for individual elements of the sketch and cut out parts from prepared fabrics (ironed and, if necessary, starched or glued with doublerin). Increases for seams are made if the edges of the part need to be folded and sewn by hand. For a zigzag machine stitch, no seam allowance is left.

There are many options for attaching an applique - the main thing is that you have an original idea.
Fabric appliqués are sewn on with a sewing machine or by hand. You can also use a special double-sided adhesive web, which will allow you to stick the fabric applique onto the fabric.
When using a machine zigzag stitch, cut out the piece exactly according to the pattern, secure it to the background scrap with pins or a basting stitch, then finish the edges of the piece with a zigzag stitch. Cut off excess fabric protruding from under the seam with small scissors. This technology greatly speeds up the execution of applique according to the pattern, but the zigzag seam itself visually blurs the boundary of the part, so it is not always used in traditional patterns.
Very often she uses machine appliqué using bindweed braid. To do this, open out the appliqué piece with a margin for the hem (0.8-1 cm) and stitch a bindweed braid onto its front side, exactly along the borders of the hem. Fold the excess fabric of the piece so that half the width of the braid forms a wavy edge along the borders of the finished patchwork piece.
