Belarus was once part of a huge, ethnically contrasting state. As part of this state, national holidays were celebrated, demonstrations and large-scale celebrations took place.

Over time, everything has changed, Belarus is already living an independent life.

But how did such changes affect the country's holiday calendar?

A little about the country

Belarus acquired its independence in the summer of 1991. It established a unitary form of government, and its permanent head of state, Alexander Lukashenko, still holds this high-ranking post.

Belarus' territorial neighbors are the Baltic countries - Latvia and Lithuania, Poland, as well as the Slavic lands of Russia and Ukraine.

The country's population is made up of Belarusians, the overwhelming majority, 83%, followed by Russians, Poles, and Ukrainians. A small percentage are foreign citizens of various European countries.

Main holidays

The continuity of the Belarusian people influenced the fact that many holidays that were once celebrated as part of the great state were preserved on the territory of the state. These also include the main holidays celebrated by most countries.

  • January 1 - New Year. A distinctive feature is that in Belarus there are no long ten-day holidays dedicated to the celebration of the New Year and Christmas. Non-working days are December 31 and January 1, as well as January 7. All other days are working days.
  • January 7—Christmas Day.
  • March 8 is International Women's Day.
  • May 1 is the Day of Peace, Spring and Labor.
  • November 7 is October Revolution Day.

These days are officially considered holidays.

National holidays

National holidays are “red” calendar dates that have important historical as well as social significance within the Republic of Belarus.

  • March 15 is Constitution Day. The holiday originates on the day of adoption of the main body of state laws - the Constitution, namely March 15, 1994.
  • April 2 is the celebration of the unity of the peoples of Belarus and Russia. Perhaps, if you conduct a survey among the population, asking: “What holiday in Belarus is one of the main and most significant?” - most people will name this holiday. On April 2, 1996, a significant event for the country took place - the signing in Moscow of the Community Treaty between Belarus and Russia, which was concluded by the heads of two states - Yeltsin and Lukashenko.
  • The 2nd Sunday of May is the day of the national flag and coat of arms, symbols of unity and independence of the country.
  • July 3 is Independence Day. This event is timed to coincide with 1944, when the Belarusian capital was completely liberated from enemy occupiers. On this day, Belarusians remember the fallen liberators who sacrificed themselves for the prosperity of not only the nation, but also all humanity. The celebration is accompanied by a solemn procession along one of the main streets of Minsk.
  • The night from July 6 to 7 represents one of the national holidays of Belarus - Kupala. On this holiday, Belarusians remember ancient national rituals, folk songs and dances, dance in circles, swim in the river and, most importantly, jump over the fire. National holidays in Belarus are celebrated accompanied by solemn demonstrations and processions.

Professional holidays of the country

Like Belarus, they can be devoted to various kinds of professions. These days are not holidays.

  • January 5 marks the holiday of social security workers.
  • January 19 is the Day of the Ministry of Emergency Situations.
  • The last Sunday of January is Science Day of the Republic of Belarus.

  • February 23 is Defender of the Fatherland Day.

Along with Russian holidays of military services, these celebrations also take place in Belarus. The dates of their celebration coincide with Russian dates.

Memorable dates

Every year, residents of the Republic honor the memory of the victims of the Great Patriotic War, as well as those killed in other disasters.

  • May 9 is the Great Victory Day. This holiday in May is as highly revered in Belarus as in Russia.
  • The 9th day after Easter is called Radunitsa. At this time, it is customary to remember the dead. People visit cemeteries and clean up graves.
  • April 26 is the date of the Chernobyl disaster.
  • On June 22, Belarusians honor and remember the victims of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
  • February 15 is a tribute to the memory of internationalist soldiers.

Orthodox and Catholic holidays

Belarusians, who respect their faith and honor Orthodox or Catholic holidays, never miss such great holidays as:

  • Easter holiday;
  • April 7 - Day of the Holy Virgin;
  • April 12—Catholic Easter;
  • December 25 - Catholics celebrate Christmas;
  • January 19 - Epiphany;
  • Maslenitsa is celebrated from February 21st for 7 days.

Major church holidays are listed here. However, the Orthodox calendar presents many days of veneration of saints.

Do Belarusians relax during the holidays?

Unlike Russia, where holidays are an excuse to take a day off once again, in Belarus they look at this a little differently.

For example, if a holiday coincides with a weekend - Saturday or Sunday, then the following weekday is a working day, and the day off is not transferred to it.

Or, if a holiday falls in the middle of the working week, then the weekdays following the holiday are turned into non-working days, but with the condition that they will be worked on Saturday of the next week.

The May holidays in Belarus, as well as New Year's celebrations, operate on the same principle.

A state holiday is a holiday established in the Republic of Belarus to commemorate an event that has special historical or socio-political significance for the Republic of Belarus, which had a significant impact on the development of the Belarusian state and society.

Public holidays in Belarus are established in accordance with Decree of the President of the Republic of Belarus dated March 26, 1998 No. 157 “On public holidays, public holidays and memorable dates in the Republic of Belarus”

The following public holidays are celebrated in the Republic of Belarus:

Holidays celebrated:

all-republican

religious

Declared non-working days:

The decision to establish public holidays and public holidays, to grant the corresponding event the status of a public holiday, is made by the President of the Republic of Belarus.

A draft of such a decision is submitted in accordance with the general procedure established for the submission of draft acts of the President of the Republic of Belarus for consideration by the President of the Republic of Belarus. The draft is accompanied by a reasoned justification for the need for its adoption.
On public holidays and national holidays, in accordance with the law, the State Flag of the Republic of Belarus is raised.

Conducting official celebrations, military parades, artillery salutes and fireworks on the occasion of public holidays and public holidays is carried out in accordance with the law.

Days dedicated to outstanding events, traditional dates, honoring workers of a certain profession, sector of the economy or field of activity, etc., are holidays if established by the President of the Republic of Belarus.

Dates that do not have the characteristics of public holidays or public holidays, but are associated with certain historical events in the life of the state and society or are traditionally celebrated by certain categories of citizens, are memorable dates.

In the Republic of Belarus, holidays established by acts of international organizations and other international legal documents may be celebrated.

The Council of Ministers of Belarus, by its resolution number 903, last year established a detailed schedule for the transfer of working days.
