Bombers: a complex men's story

Let's start with the fact that bombers were originally a men's type of clothing, but... not so glamorous, but rather utilitarian-nostalgic. Unlike most trends, which seem to emerge initially from the "whims" of fashion and do not inherit any specific point of origin or plot, bomber jackets are clearly traced through history - not just fashion, but also war. (Yes, yes, in fact, the very name of the jacket is a derivative of the word “bomber.”)

Presumably, the origin of the bombers can be attributed to the image of a single person - an American soldier, some of whom were stationed immediately after World War II in the occupied Japanese city of Yokosuka. This soldier (his name, unfortunately, history has not preserved) came up with a great idea: take his bomber pilot jacket and take it to a local tailor to have it embroidered, thereby turning a symbol of war into a serene and beautiful souvenir. When his co-workers were able to look at this unique piece of clothing, they decided that they would like to have something similar to take home with them as a souvenir. And all the soldiers from the unit began to take their aviation jackets to local craftsmen for decoration.

This was probably a somewhat strange situation for the local population of Japan (and the American military themselves) - to embroider the clothes of the occupying army with stereotypical symbols of their people: geishas and eagles, cherry blossoms and dragons... Sometimes, at the request of customers, bomber jackets were also decorated with maps military campaigns. (At the same time, bombers were almost always reversible - and if a soldier wandered into a location where it was extremely undesirable to demonstrate his military exploits on his back, the jacket could always be turned inside out.)

One way or another, all American military personnel began to take their jackets to Japanese craftsmen in order to turn them into jewelry. At the end of World War II, many men and women from the United States served in Japan - they all wanted to return to their native land as quickly as possible, but orders are orders... And so preparing memorable gifts for themselves and their close friends and relatives became one of the few available entertainment options. Using their clothes as canvas, they ordered souvenirs for themselves. The embroidered aviator jacket trend quickly became popularized and developed as soldiers began carrying personal items and other clothing items for modification or decoration. Local tailors were given not only government-issued jackets, but also shirts, which were decorated and embroidered with various texts and images.

The custom soon spread to other American military bases in Japan, with local craftsmen making their own versions of bomber jackets for sale - and the trend of these embroidered military jackets literally exploded. As demand outpaced supply, Japanese tailors began creating jackets from leftover parachute silk and other fabrics not originally intended for clothing. Soon they began to be worn as civilian clothing. Materials, colors, cut and design - all the details of bombers have begun to develop and change over the years. Soon enough, their female version also became popular. Surprisingly, in the 1960s, bomber jackets were worn by Japanese gangs. Teenagers soon followed suit: wearing an embroidered American pilot jacket, they demonstrated an act of rebellion that may have horrified their parents who lived through the war years.

20 years after the occupation of Japan, young soldiers who served in the East, but in a different military arena, similarly wanted to keep souvenirs for themselves. But instead of cherries and escort girls, their jackets often showed maps of Vietnam and slogans like: “When I die, I will go to heaven, because I served in hell.”

By the beginning of the 21st century, bomber jackets had changed greatly, “overgrown” with other symbols, meaning and aesthetics of street style, and many of them do not contain decorative elements at all. Well, in Japan, embroidered aviator jackets are still known under the name Sukajan: some fashion historians decipher the etymology of this word as “Sky Dragon Jumper,” which in Japanese means “Dragon soaring from the sky.” However, others believe that it is a combination of two words - the locality "Yokosuka" plus and the word "Skydiver". This is an abridged and simplified story of the origins of the Sukajyan - bomber jackets popular among both men and women for more than half a century.

Bombers: inexhaustible popularity

These utilitarian "pieces of history" are still in demand and are in great demand among both collectors (vintage) and fashion lovers (new). Bombers are a chic example of personalized clothing: bright jackets, decorated with intricate embroidery in different color variations, show the character, history, preferences, views and even philosophy of their owner to the outside world.

What is a bomber jacket? Short story

Once upon a time, a bomber jacket was a name given to voluminous and rather heavy sheepskin coats made of leather, designed specifically for bombers and pilots.

The classic bomber jacket refers, firstly, to the MA-1 model - a light, short nylon jacket with thick elastic at the waist and cuffs. Features of this model also include a knit collar, orange lining, pocket on the sleeve, and the color - sage green or dark blue.

The MA-1 model acquired its most recognizable detail - a bright orange lining - in 1963, when bomber jackets were worn only by the American military. In the event of an ejection from the cockpit or an emergency landing, the pilot who landed on the ground would turn his jacket inside out, thereby making it easier for air rescuers to conduct their own searches.

In the 1990s, designers Giorgio Armani and adept Helmut Lang drew attention to the classic style of the flight jacket. A little later, the designer and former creative director of Christian Dior Raf Simons brought the bomber jacket to high society as part of his debut(!) collection. Since then, bomber jackets have settled on the catwalks, and their variations, which are quite far from the classic ones, can be seen in the collections of both budget brands - H&M, Zara, Stradivarius or Supreme, and terribly expensive ones, such as, say, Alexander McQueen, Kenzo and even Chanel .

Moreover, as soon as women began to wear bomber jackets, the classic version was left with horns and legs and, at most, elastic bands on the belt and cuffs. Bomber jackets are now made from suede, denim, wool and silk. Color block and other prints appeared on bomber jackets - floral, animalistic, abstract, in general, pretty and girly.
