Knitted clothes for dogs. The subtleties of knitting clothes and shoes for dogs Do-it-yourself knitted overalls for a small dog

Any dog lover tries to please his pet in everything. Many dogs, especially short-haired and small ones, begin to feel very cold as soon as the temperature outside drops below zero. Clothes will help make your pet's life more comfortable - the patterns for them are quite simple, so even a beginner can knit warm clothes for a pet. One of the most successful options is a jumpsuit. Knitting it does not require any special calculations; moreover, it is easy to put on.

As with any garment, you first need to take measurements.

How to take measurements

Before measuring the parameters, to make the measurements easier, put a collar on the dog, it will be easier. In this case, the collar should fit freely on the neck.

Measurements for dog clothing mean:

  • The length of the overalls is measured from the collar to the beginning of the dog's tail, if we are making the overalls over the entire body. Otherwise, we measure the length that is expected.
  • We measure the length of the sternum from the shoulder blades to the end of the chest.
  • To measure the neck circumference, remove the collar and measure against it.
  • We measure the circumference of the chest behind the dog's front paws.
  • Waist circumference is measured at the narrowest part of the body.
  • The length of the hood is measured from the withers to the occipital protuberance. If you wish, you can add a couple of centimeters.
  • If necessary, you can also measure the length and girth of the paws.

Since small dogs most often get cold, it is for them that there are the largest number of different options for making overalls. Actually, the knitting pattern is one, but the pattern can be very different.

Here are several DIY clothing options for small dogs - you will find patterns and knitting patterns for every taste below.

Knitted clothes for dogs: blanket

If complex knitting is not yet available to you, and you are not at all familiar with patterns, there is a very simple option for making clothes for your pet: a blanket made in the shape of a triangle. This cape is perfect for a Chihuahua. You don't need any patterns for it, just back measurements.

Start knitting from the tail, gradually adding loops. The length should be slightly longer than the length of the back. A loop is made near the tail, which will subsequently cling to the dog’s tail. Ribbons are sewn onto the remaining two corners, which will then be tied on the stomach. Instead of ribbons, you can use buttons or Velcro.

The blanket can also be knitted in a rectangular shape for a toy terrier; in this case, it is made until it covers the entire back. Quite often the edges begin to curl. To prevent this, it is necessary to make the first and last few stitches into scarf stitches.

There is another option for making blankets. It is more convenient for active dogs, since the edges of the blanket do not get tangled under their paws.

These blankets are great for dachshunds.

Below is a pattern and an expanded view of the blanket.

The blanket can be made either with a pattern or in a continuous smooth knit. At your discretion.

Crochet

You can knit not only with knitting needles, but also with crochet, if that’s more convenient for you. You can use the same patterns as for knitting needles, or you can try new ones.

For example, this cute lace-up sundress.

Here is the pattern for knitting it:

In some cases, crocheting clothes for mini dogs is even more convenient.

In fact, it doesn’t matter what you knit with - knitting or crocheting, the main thing is that it is done with love. And then your dog will not freeze.

To learn this, although simple, but painstaking task, we offer you a selection of training videos.

Knitting for dogs was not invented in our time. Back in the 18th century, at the court of the English queen, it was considered indecent to appear with a “naked” dog. Initially, the reason for the appearance of clothing for pets was a particularly humid and windy climate. Animals, especially compact ones, had to be protected from frequent rains and drafts that walked along the corridors of medieval castles. It all started with waterproof blankets and raincoats. But noble ladies, who strived to decorate everything around them, could not deny themselves the pleasure of dressing their dogs in costumes to match their toilets. And then it began: an abundance of ruffles, pearl beads, fur trim, hand-knitted lace... That’s just how we are, women!

Clothes for your favorite pets

Knitting for animals is more relevant today than ever. Handmade work is beginning to be valued again, and needlewomen are no longer compared to grandmothers. Now, on the contrary, every fashionista strives to knit herself, or order from a master, for herself and her dog, identical large hand-knitted sweaters, or funny hats.

Clothes for pets are knitted or crocheted from natural wool or cotton, for the winter, or even for the summer. Dog breeds whose skin does not have hair need not only warm clothes during the cold season, but also light clothing that protects them from overheating and sunburn. For this, sweaters or overalls are knitted from very thin cotton yarn, light in color. In addition to clothing, shoes are often knitted. Knitted boots and boots with thickened soles protect against hypothermia and also protect against the harmful effects of salt and chemicals on the dog’s paw pads.

Knitting for animals is not much different from creating clothes for people. Before starting work, it is important to understand the physiology of the dog’s body structure and take into account its mobility. The ideal option for an active pet is a jumpsuit. It does not ride up, has a tight but not restrictive fit, and also warms the whole body. That’s why I suggest knitting a jumpsuit for your pet. This is a lightweight model, which will allow you to come up with your own design for it in the future. Let's get started!

Where to begin

We always start knitting for dogs by taking measurements. Anyone who has already created clothes for a pet probably knows them by heart! We will need to measure:

  • neck circumference (NC) for the collar;
  • chest width (SH);
  • girth of the front paws (OPL) for sleeves;
  • body length (D) from the withers to the beginning of the tail;
  • hind leg girth (HZL) for trouser legs.

This model of overalls for a dog imitates a suit consisting of a sweater and pants, so you will need yarn in two colors, contrasting, or in the same color scheme, at your discretion.
Also, for the work you need knitting needles that match the yarn. Set of hosiery, and circular.

Neck and raglan

In order to knit the neckline, we need the OSH measurement. We calculate the number of loops, round to an even number, and work with stocking needles. We knit with a 1x1 elastic band of the required height. The collar can be knit high, like a sweater, or even a lapel, or vice versa, short, like a jumper.

Next, raglan. Let's do a simple calculation: divide the number of loops available by three. These are the back, front, and two sleeves. For example, in my case there are 64 loops, which cannot be divided by three, so it turns out to be somewhere around 21.333. But, we take into account that the back is a little wider than the front, so we don’t need the same number of loops. It turns out 24p. on the back, 20 on the front, and 20 on the paws (10 for each). (24+20+20=64).

We place markers on the border of future parts, or tie ropes of a contrasting color.

And now, about why the dog’s overalls are called “Pearl”. Yes, that's right, because of the pattern, it is also called "Rice". But "Rice" is not a good name for a onesie, my dog would rather eat it!

There will be no diagram in this master class, since the drawing is very simple. Immediately after finishing the elastic, we knit a knit stitch over each purl stitch, and a purl stitch over each stitch. And so on in every row. This is an original and simple replacement for those who are tired of regular stitching with knitting needles.

When there is one stitch left in front of the marker, make a yarn over, then a knit stitch, transfer the marker, and again a knit stitch, yarn over, and continue according to the pattern.

In the next row we knit the yarn over, following the “pearl” pattern. So, gradually, the canvas will expand. When it no longer fits on double needles, we “change” the stitches to circular ones.

We knit until the front part matches the SHG, and the armholes for the sleeves are OPL.

Sleeves and body

We transfer the sleeve loops to auxiliary knitting needles and knit in the round, casting on another 10 - 15 loops.

We continue to knit the “sweater” for the dog of our overalls to the desired length. You can finish in the middle of the body, or lengthen it a little. We finish this part with a 1 x1 elastic band.

Close the elastic band.

Now let's move on to the sleeves.

We put the loops that we additionally cast on the knitting needle.

You need to knit several rows in a circular pattern, remembering to follow the pattern. We choose the length arbitrarily. We finish the sleeve with an elastic band 1 x1, yarn of a different color.

"Pants"

On the inside of the elastic, on the back of the “sweater,” we put on the loops on the knitting needles.

And, with a thread of a different color, we knit panties, following the “Rice” pattern.

Where the hind legs begin, we will make a slight expansion of the canvas. To do this, in the front rows we add a loop at the beginning and end of the row. We do this three or four times.

For the pant leg you will need the OZL measurement. We cast on the required number of loops and knit with stocking needles. The length of the pants depends on the length of the dog's legs.

Winter is just around the corner, and it's time to think about how to knit a warm sweater for your dog. This is especially true for small pets and for animals that do not have hair. There are many such dog breeds, and they need our care and warmth like no other breed. How to knit a sweater for your beloved dog or create one from an old human one?

Choosing a model

Before you start creating a real work of art from threads - dog clothes, you should decide which model to choose. Your choice will be made by your skills, the size and build of your pet, its breed, as well as weather conditions.

Selecting yarn and tools

What might you need to knit a sweater for a dog? The list of tools and materials is small, but it can be supplemented with other elements depending on the chosen model.

Minimum knitting set:

  • yarn;
  • hook or knitting needles;
  • scissors;
  • needle;
  • threads

You may also need buckles, buttons, zippers, ribbons and other accessories to decorate and improve the functionality of a knitted item. Threads will be needed to sew together different parts of the future suit.

What to knit from?

The most important element needed to create a knitted item is yarn. Her choice must be taken with full responsibility.
To make a dog sweater warm and keep you warm in cold weather, it is best to take wool or acrylic yarn. The first is a completely natural material that holds heat well and for a long time. But it has a minus - the product will quickly stretch out and become pellet-like.

Acrylic - yarn made from artificial wool, synthetics. Very durable and can come in very bright colors. But its main disadvantage is the ability to accumulate static electricity, which will cause discomfort to the dog.

Cotton yarn is the best option when it comes to dog breeds with fur. But it is too thin to retain heat in cold weather.

Based on the above, we can conclude that it is best to use mixed yarn for knitted dog clothes. Products made from it will wash well, last a long time and will not lose their appearance.

Remaking an old sweater

If you do not have knitting skills, you can create a blouse for your dog from your old sweater. For a small dog, doll clothes or a child's blouse will do just fine, but a large dog can easily fit into a sweatshirt. But such wardrobe items will require some modification.

The waist of a human sweater will be large for any breed of dog, so you can sew an elastic band there to narrow the volume of an old sweater. You can cut a fabric item and then sew the edges again, adjusting it to the size of the dog, but this option will not work with a knitted item. If you cut a sweater, it will simply unravel. So here only the option using an elastic band is suitable.

How to knit it yourself?

What could be more beautiful than clothes for a dog that you create yourself? Here you can let your imagination flutter and come up with absolutely any variations of models. But creating a dog jacket with your own hands is a long, painstaking, but very interesting task.

Taking measurements

Before you start knitting dog clothes, you should decide on its size. To do this, we take measurements from the pet. Depending on the selected clothing model, the number of measurements may vary. We'll tell you how to take measurements for a sweater.

To get started, prepare a pen, a piece of paper and a measuring tape and call your dog to you. Give the command “Stand” and, picking up a centimeter, begin taking measurements:

  • chest circumference – at the fullest part;
  • neck circumference - in the place where it is widest;
  • back length - from the point where the neck meets the back to the tail;
  • leg height – from armpit to pastern;
  • leg girth – at the thickest point.

These measurements will be enough to sew or knit a sweater with sleeves for your dog. If you want to create a jumpsuit, you need to measure the distance between the front and back legs, waist circumference, hip circumference, and the height of the hind legs. How to take measurements to sew or knit an outfit is described in the following video.

Materials and tools

To create a knitted sweater or vest for your pet, you will need:

  • crochet hook or knitting needles (depending on what you own);
  • required amount of yarn;
  • knitting pattern;
  • patterns built to your dog's measurements;
  • scissors;
  • threads and needles to sew parts;
  • rubber.

Instructions

Instructions for creating clothes for a dog will directly depend on the chosen model and knitting pattern. But there are several points that will be common to almost all models.

  • To begin with, depending on the chosen yarn, you should calculate the number of loops per 1 cm. Then we calculate how many of them are needed in accordance with the measurements of the animal. To do this, we knit a small sample of the pattern.
  • We knit each part of the sweater separately: the back, sleeves, chest, collar and elastic at the waist.
  • In some cases, you can knit an item in the round - this option is suitable for vests.
  • We knit the blanket with a continuous thread, almost without interruption.
  • If you are knitting a sweater, then, having created each of its parts separately, you must connect them together. This can be done by tying the pieces together or sewing them together.
  • Lastly, when the control fitting is done, the collar and elastic at the waist are knitted.
  • Sometimes you can do without long sleeves - then the sweater is knitted like a vest. Small sleeves are simply attached to the almost finished product.

Sweater for a small dog

Knitting a sweater for small dogs is practically no different from creating the same copy of clothing for a larger dog. The only difference is that for children it is often necessary to create not one, but several clothes per change. After all, a large dog does not need to be dressed as often as a baby chishka or toy, for whom any cold is like death. Such breeds are very difficult to tolerate frost.

We knit a dog blouse, always starting from the collar, and towards the end of the product we reduce the number of loops so that the sweater is fitted. Below are several patterns that are suitable for knitting dog clothes.

The Russian Toy Terrier is a tiny indoor decorative dog, up to 26 cm tall and weighing up to 2.7 kg. This is a very sociable breed, devoted to its owner, but the owner does not like to be left alone for a long time. Fortunately, its size allows you to carry the dog with you, in a basket or in your arms, and it will also be allowed into a hotel and any type of transport.

It is convenient to keep him, since he copes with his toilet needs from the cat litter box. But, despite its indoor purpose, like all living beings, it needs walks in the fresh air. This is necessary for both physical and mental health. And since these dogs are not only long-haired, but also short-haired, Clothes for the Russian Toy Terrier are relevant almost all year round.

First of all, you will need warm winter clothes. The most practical model is a jumpsuit made of fleece or synthetic padding, possibly with a Bolognese top. You can buy clothes for toy terriers at a pet store or online store. A dog should choose a model with a bare tummy, and a girl with a completely covered one.

In addition, you can choose other types of clothing: down jackets, fur coats, coats, jackets, sweatshirts, sweaters, pants. In rainy weather or wet snow, it is better to wear a waterproof raincoat overall, with a thin sweater and pants underneath.

Despite the fact that the toy is a tame dog, you should not let it go, the animal must actively move. That’s why you’ll need boots for the winter. They will not only warm little paws, but also protect them from many dangers: broken glass, sharp ice, machine oil, salt mixture, etc.

Any clothing store for toy terriers will also offer a tracksuit. The dog needs it for a walk in the forest or park, so that the needles do not prick, and bloodsuckers do not have a chance to get into the pet’s fur. A tracksuit is also useful for protecting your clothes or car seats if your dog is traveling somewhere with you.

In winter, the house is not always heated enough for a dog that is constantly on the cold floor to feel comfortable enough. Therefore, the terrier will also need home clothes: knitted overalls or light pajamas, often one sweater is enough.

How to sew clothes for toy terriers: patterns

Many owners of small dogs strive sew clothes for toy terriers with your own hands. You can try to master this activity by making home clothes. To do this, you can use out-of-fashion human clothing or do it yourself. knit clothes for toy terriers from leftover yarn. To do this, you need to learn how to correctly take all the measurements of your pet: neck circumference, chest circumference behind the front legs and back length from the beginning of the neck to the tail.

On the Internet you can find a wide variety of clothing patterns for dogs and not only the most necessary and popular models. Fashionistas love to dress up their dogs in the most unusual clothes: from dresses and skirts to hats, wedding and carnival outfits.

Examples of clothing patterns for toy terriers

  1. Cut from checkered fabric without seam allowances: 1 back piece, 2 shelves, 2 sleeves, 2 collar pieces (the pattern is designed for the following dimensions: dog chest circumference 36 cm; neck circumference 21 cm; back length 32 cm; back width 10 cm ). At the same time, make sure that the cells are located symmetrically relative to the midline of the back. Carefully align the horizontal lines of the pattern on the shelves and on the back (along the side cut).
  2. Sew the details of the back with the shelves along the side sections with a seam 1 cm from the edge, along the shoulders - 0.8 cm. Press the seams in different directions.
  3. Sew in the sleeves. Align the marks on the sleeve and back. Connect the sleeve to the armhole, pinching them with needles in different directions from the mark. Sew a side seam on the sleeve and baste the details. Place a stitch along the sleeve 0.5 cm from the edge. Press the seam by folding the seam allowance towards the inside of the sleeve.
  4. Open out the parts from the lining fabric (1 back, 2 shelves, 2 sleeves) and sew the lining (see description in paragraphs 2-3). Press the seams. Sew the edges of the lining face to face with the edges of the “frock coat” made of checkered fabric (along the line of the fastener).
  5. Sew the collar pieces along the top line with a seam 0.5 cm from the edge. Iron the parts, make notches on the curves, turn the collar out, straighten the seam with a needle, sweep and iron it.
  6. Baste the collar to the lining neckline (face to face). Baste the lines of the neck of the “coat” and the lining, sewing a collar between them. Place a stitch 0.5 cm from the seam. Turn the pieces right side out, straighten the lining and press the seams.
  7. Cut out 2 strips of bias tape 3.5 cm wide to finish the bottom edge of the “frock coat” (at an angle of 45 * to the grain thread). Sew them at an angle of 90* to each other (along the bias cuts) and iron the seam. Stitch the binding along the bottom edge (face-to-face with the lining) using a seam 0.6 cm from the edges, while joining the lining and plaid pieces together.
  8. Turn the facing over to the “face”, fold its edge inward and baste, closing the stitching seam. Sew along the edge of the facing fold.
  9. Make a fastener by sewing matching parts of adhesive tape onto the shelves.
  10. Sew the belt. Cut out a strip of checkered fabric along an oblique line (40-45 cm long, 3-4 cm wide - along the width of the buckle). Make a strip of lining fabric 3 cm wider and place it under the “checkered” fabric. Wrap the left seam allowance around both edges of the waistband and topstitch. Finish the ends of the belt by folding the edge of the lining 2 times. To fasten the belt, sew pieces of adhesive tape at the ends. Sew belt loops from a strip 4.5 cm wide. Fold it in half lengthwise, iron the fold, fold both edges inward and stitch. Sew 2 belt loops onto the back of the “frock coat” and insert a belt into them.

Knitted jumpsuit pattern

By learning how to sew or knit on your own toy terrier, you can save a lot on his clothes.

To prevent decorative dogs from freezing while walking in winter, many owners knit clothes for them.
I decided to show you how to knit the simplest and most ordinary jumpsuit. Based on such a jumpsuit, you can knit any kind of jumpsuit.

Before you start knitting, you need to take measurements of the dog. And knit a sample to calculate the knitting density.
Picture from the Internet.

Jumpsuit measurements:
1. 44cm(4cm on belly)
2. 30 cm
3. 28 cm
4. 32 cm
5. 10 cm
6. 20 cm
7. 12 cm
The overalls are knitted from head to tail in one piece, without thread breakage. You will need: Straight knitting needles, circular knitting needles and a crochet hook. Threads p/w 100 grams = 250 meters.
We will knit according to the raglan principle from top to bottom.
Cast on as many stitches as needed for the neckline. I have 65 loops and knit with any elastic band that is convenient for you. I have 1*1

Next, we divide the loops into 5 parts: left shelf, left shoulder, back, right shoulder, right shelf. I divided it like this: 14p. left shelf, 3p (p1, k1, p1) - raglan line (hereinafter referred to as RG), 3p. left shoulder, RG, 27p. back, RG, 3p. right shoulder, RG, 14p. right shelf. And we knit a regular raglan from top to bottom, adding 1 loop on both sides of each RG in each front row.

We knit to the armpits of the front paws. We transfer knitting to circular knitting needles.

We knit the loops of the left front, removing them onto the right circular knitting needle.

RG, loops of the left sleeve, RG are knitted with facial loops using a straight knitting needle. Now we have the loops of the left sleeve on a straight needle, and the rest on circular ones.

We close the loops, DO NOT cut the thread.

Fold the sleeve inside out and crochet the sleeve to the armpit (the junction of the front and back) starting from the last loop of the closed row.

We connect the left front, the last loop of the closed sleeve, casting on 2 loops from the loops of the previous row between them, casting on two loops from the loops of the previous row between the last loop of the closed sleeve and the back, knitting the back loops with CIRCULAR knitting needles to the RG. We knit the RG, right sleeve and RG in front of the right front with knit stitches using a straight knitting needle. Thus, on circular knitting needles we have a left shelf connected to the back and a right shelf. Using the pattern of the left sleeve, we knit the right one. We connect the back and the right shelf, not forgetting to pick up the loops in the armpit. Getting the top part of the overalls

From the armpits we knit the front and back at the same time. We knit the last few rows on the shelves with an elastic band. From the front side, close the loops of the left front, knit the back and right front, turn over, close the loops of the right front in the purl row. Only the back loops remain on the knitting needles

We knit the back to the beginning of the hind legs. And again we knit raglan, as for the front legs.

We sew the cuffs with an elastic band in the same way.
