What menu to prepare for a child's baptism. What to cook for a celebration in honor of a child's baptism

Christening is a holiday that happens only once in a lifetime, which means you need to try to organize it so that it is memorable for all its participants and so that the baby has some souvenirs from his christening: photographs, for this it is better to invite a professional photographer to the christening, measuring icon, postcards from invited guests.

Often christening is the first holiday in the life of a newborn.
How to prepare for a christening celebration?
What to consider and not forget?

In a series of our articles we will help you prepare for christening.

On the eve of a holiday, the unimaginable always happens; in this bustle, the main thing is not to forget anything.
Therefore, it is better to think through the table setting and menu in advance, providing for small details that will highlight your individuality. Decide in advance what style you would like to decorate everything in. The choice of theme largely depends on the dishes you have available. After all, it is easier to match the tablecloth to the dishes rather than vice versa. Christening is a bright holiday, the main color that should be used is white. It is better to choose a tablecloth white, cream or beige. You can support the textile theme with a table runner, top tablecloth and chair covers tied with ribbons.

It would be appropriate to decorate the table with figurines of angels and confetti. Place flower arrangements on the tables in light pastel colors. Bouquets only complement the decoration of the christening table; they should not disturb the guests or block their view. As for the flowers themselves, it is better to avoid varieties with a strong aroma. Their smell should not distract from the delicious filling of the table. In a simplified version, you can simply scatter some petals on the table.

Don't forget about candles. Even a couple of candles on the table will create coziness and add a special romantic touch.
The color of the candles should match the color scheme of the table. You can choose any candlesticks and candles of a wide variety of shapes. Long candles are placed in low candlesticks, and vice versa, short candles are placed in tall ones.

If the option with candlesticks does not suit you, you can put small candles in small glasses; for a special effect, you can pour water into the glass. When thinking about beauty, don’t forget about safety: don’t place candles too close to flowers and napkins.

For table setting, choose white dishes - they always look solemn and elegant, and you can decorate the plates themselves with beautifully folded napkins made of thick paper or fabric.

The complete table setting scheme is quite simple. So, let's put everything in order:

  1. A large placeholder (or serving) plate, which may differ from the rest in its unusual decoration. It is placed in the middle at a distance of 2 cm from the edge of the table and remains on the table until the end of the meal.

  2. The pie plate, which is used for serving bread and other flour products, is placed to the left behind the substitution plate at a distance of 5 cm from it.

  3. A dining fork for main courses is placed to the left of the plate.

  4. Fish fork - placed to the left of the table fork, only if fish dishes are intended to be served on the table.

  5. A table knife for second courses is placed to the right of the plate with the blade facing it.

  6. A table spoon is placed to the right of the knife only if the first course is to be served.

  7. Fish knife - placed to the right of the tablespoon, only if fish dishes are intended to be served on the table.

  8. Cognac glass (Snifter) - placed behind the fish knife.

  9. A glass for white wine is placed behind a glass for cognac, to the left of it.

  10. Red wine glass - placed behind the white wine glass, to the left, so that all three glasses form an even line.

  11. Champagne glass (Flute) - placed behind the white wine glass, during the meal it is furthest from the person.

  12. A plate with a diameter of 27 cm for serving main courses - brought when serving the dish.

  13. A deep plate or broth pair - brought when serving the first course.

  14. If any special dishes are served during the meal that require additional utensils, they are brought along with these dishes.

The sequence of table setting begins with arranging the plates:

The Sacrament of Baptism is not just a beautiful Orthodox rite, but also a solemn and important event in the life of every person. Flickering candles, the scent of incense, splashes of holy water sparkling in the gilding of icons, quiet prayer and the expectation of a miracle in the air. And indeed, baptism is a miracle, because in these moments a person (whether born a few days ago or who has lived for decades) is born a second time, from these minutes he steps under the cover of the hand of God and finds a guardian angel for life.

When choosing godparents for your child, remember that these are the people who will become your little one’s spiritual mentors, advisers and helpers in life. Therefore, treat the choice of godfather and godmother with all scrupulousness and prudence.

Baptism is an important event that happens only once in a lifetime. Therefore, for a long time there has been a tradition to celebrate this significant event, gathering family and friends around a rich and satisfying table. And the name of this feast is christening.

In ancient times, the main figure at christenings was the midwife, because it was she who was revered and thanked for helping the woman in labor ease her pain and the baby to be born as quickly and painlessly as possible. Therefore, one of the obligatory treats at christenings were the so-called “grandmother’s pies” - small products made from sweet yeast dough (buns and bagels, flowers, horseshoes, ears, pretzels, etc.).

In addition to baked goods, “babina’s porridge” or kutia was an obligatory guest on the festive table. Of course, each housewife prepared this dish in her own way, with secrets and tricks known only to her. It differed from Lenten Sochik in that the cereal was soaked in milk, and the finished porridge was generously seasoned with butter, cream, and egg yolks. Baptismal porridge was served in a large pot, which was then carefully smashed on the corner of the table. The porridge that remained on the table and in their hands was treated to everyone at the table: some was eaten by the mother of the newborn, and some was enjoyed by the guests (not forgetting to grab a handful for their children). But the child’s father had to try the famous porridge “with fun” - horseradish, mustard, and a large amount of salt and pepper were added to the dish. Thus, in a comic form, they wanted to show the parent at least part of the torment that his wife had to experience during childbirth. Among other things, a chicken or a rooster was often baked in baptismal porridge (depending on the gender of the little man born), and along with the porridge, scrambled eggs, jellied meat, ham and other equally tasty, satisfying and appetizing dishes were placed on the table.

In addition to all of the above, children present at the holiday were presented with small gifts, such as walnuts, beans and peas. This was done so that the newborn was talkative and eloquent, that is, his words “came out like peas.” Much later, a tradition arose (which came to us from Europe) to give gifts to little guests (and adults too) in the form of small beautiful boxes or bags filled with white and multi-colored tasty jelly beans.

You can create a modern version of the festive menu for christening, focusing on the taste preferences of the guests who will gather at the table in your home. Of course, we should not forget that special attention must be paid to creating a menu for a feast in which children will participate. Choose dishes that both children and their parents can enjoy. The baptismal menu should be varied and tasty, but this does not mean that the festive table should be filled with a huge number of unusual foods, foreign fruits and expensive gourmet drinks.

I bring to your attention 2 menu options for the baptismal table. You may want to decorate your holiday strictly in accordance with the proposed options, or it may be that you will replace some of the dishes we offer with dishes that are more familiar to you.

Christening menu No. 1

Most moms and dads today no longer ask questions like, “Will we baptize our baby?” or “How to conduct a baptism ceremony so that no one at work or any of the neighbors finds out about it?”

To many young people, these questions seem strange and ridiculous. But believe me, our grandmothers, grandfathers and those who lived during the USSR remember that baptism was, to put it mildly, “not fashionable.” My father, for example, was baptized secretly from my parents. While they were at work, my great-grandmother and her neighbor took little dad to church and baptized him.

There was no talk of any celebration in honor of this event. Now in the CIS almost all parents baptize their children and they do not face the problem of solving the issues described above.

Main problems: father and godmother (these people must be reliable, worthy, so to speak, proven by life) and how to celebrate christening: what to serve at the festive table so that the guests will be pleased and will not put a strain on the host’s budget.

I myself am a mother of two (both boys are 5 years and 7 months old), and also a godmother to two charming little girls. Plus, I participated in two more festivities dedicated to christenings, one of which was dedicated to me (I was baptized at the age of 13). So we have experience in this matter.

Nowadays, not every family adheres to traditions in resolving these issues.

Firstly, it was previously accepted invite a person to the festive table, who took delivery of a woman (midwife or midwife) and was almost the most important guest at the christening. Agree, now this is somewhat inappropriate, although some parents still manage to somehow “lure” an obstetrician to visit them.

I know a case where a girl whose child was born after spending 8 months in the hospital, the doctor who observed her and then delivered the baby, became the godfather of her child.

Secondly, according to Orthodox traditions, the main treat on the table there were a variety of pies, pretzels made from yeast dough, as well as porridge with poultry baked in it (most often it was chicken), which was served in a clay pot.

As far as my life experience allows me to judge, it is not often that we serve pies and porridge, even the most delicious ones, when our dear guests arrive. Maybe this is in vain...

Mostly potatoes are served(some baked with mushrooms, some in French) plus a variety of salads and cold cuts. Drinks are most often some kind of wine, vodka, as well as juice or carbonated drinks, and for dessert - cake and sweets.

But you can keep traditions and surprise guests by slightly interpreting these dishes in a modern way. For those mothers who don’t like fussing with dough, buy ready-made puff pastry at the store.

Prepare several different fillings, for example, potatoes with liver and sweets - poppy seeds, nuts, raisins, twisted in a meat grinder with sugar. Make small pies, brush with egg or milk and pop into the oven. Guests will be delighted!

Instead of porridge, you can cook potatoes with chicken(if you baptized a boy, try to take a rooster) in the same pot, now you can easily buy them in a store or market. For drinks, serve Cahors wine to the adults and make compote for the children. With a clear conscience, you can “dilute” this assortment with some of your own salads, sweets, fruits...

Serve it all on a white elegant tablecloth, in beautiful dishes, receive guests with an open soul and a smile - and that’s it! I think the guests will be pleased. And remember - of course, WHAT you submit is important, but HOW you do it is much more important!

Our feast after the christening was very modest - we bought a bottle of wine, I baked a pie with potatoes and mushrooms, but everyone really enjoyed it. We sat, celebrated, and went home..

and we did all the barbecue with our family.
In the fall, I had the opportunity to attend the christening of my daughter’s “friend,” who was born 5 days later than her. Friend is French. I was very surprised how it all went there. 5 children were baptized. The church was crowded; everyone had relatives from different parts of France and Europe. They came to our Teo from Bordeaux.
And after the baptism there was a party for 100 guests with a disco and all the activities. I especially liked that the guests were given bags of candy and artificial flowers to remember this event. And the treat was the simplest. Various hot dog sandwiches, snacks and cake. I liked it very much.

Baptism is a sacrament. Organizing a small treat for godparents and those closest to you is quite natural. Organizing large-scale celebrations on this occasion is typical of secular traditions, but not of church traditions.

Few people now know about traditional treats after a christening and more often than not they don’t even think about it. They celebrate as an ordinary family holiday with the usual and accepted treats in their family.
